About
Quick facts: The gardens span 10 acres with terraced levels that cascade down a hillside, blending formal European design with wild native woodlands. Inside, the house holds a museum collection of over 20,000 pre-Columbian and Byzantine art objects, including rare Byzantine silver and ivory carvings.
Highlights: Wander through the secluded Pebble Garden, where smooth river stones are set into intricate geometric patterns in the mortar, creating a subtle mosaic underfoot that shifts appearance with the light. The original magnolia trees planted in the 1920s still bloom each spring, their enormous white petals drifting across the Orangery lawn.
Insider tips
- Enter through the Lovers' Lane gate on R Street for a quieter entrance and a dramatic reveal of the gardens.
- Bring a pair of binoculars to spot the dozens of bird species that nest in the old oak trees along the woodland path.
- Skip the gift shop and instead spend 15 minutes in the Music Room, where the acoustics make even whispers sound resonant.
- Visit after a light rain the cobblestones and reflecting pools create mirror-like photographs with no crowds.
