Money tips for Bukhara, Uzbekistan

  • Fair taxi price (official, daytime): 30,000 UZS - 50,000 UZS (€2.5 - €4). Use Yandex Taxi or the official rank at the terminal. Unlicensed drivers outside the terminal often quote 2 to 3 times the fair price. Agree on the fare before boarding if not using the app.
  • Best alternative: Shared taxi or marshrutka from outside the terminal into the old city area (5,000 UZS (€0.38))
  • Pay the driver or conductor in cash when boarding city buses and minibuses. There is no tap-on system. Keep your change as drivers may not always carry small notes.
  • Not expected but appreciated in tourist areas. 5 to 10% at nicer restaurants. Small change for guides and drivers. Rounding up the fare for taxi drivers is common.
  • No widespread cover or bread charge like in some European cities. Some tourist-oriented restaurants may add a service charge without mentioning it, so check the bill. Be cautious at places that do not show prices on the menu.
  • Always choose to be charged in Uzbek som and decline dynamic currency conversion at ATMs and card terminals. Prefer ATMs attached to bank branches over standalone machines in tourist areas, which can carry higher fees. Carry cash as backup since small shops, bazaars and stalls often do not take cards. Exchange only at official bank counters or licensed exchange points with posted rates; compare rates before converting.
