About

Quick facts: Over 15 million letters and packages pass through this grand colonial building each year. Its soaring neo-Renaissance hall features a massive portrait of Ho Chi Minh watching over the counters below.

Highlights: A faded wooden telephone booth near the entrance still contains an original 1920s rotary phone that visitors can actually use for local calls. The building's interior was the first in Saigon to be lit entirely by electricity when it opened, with brass chandeliers that still hang from the 18-meter ceiling today.

Insider tips

  • Bring small bills if you want to buy stamps, as the counter staff rarely have change for large denominations.
  • Look up at the intricate mosaic map of old Indochina embedded in the floor near the main entrance.
  • The wooden writing desks along the side walls are original from the 1890s and free for anyone to use.
  • Avoid visiting between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM when the main counters close for lunch break.
