Hue's royal tombs (Khai Dinh or Tu Duc)

About
Quick facts: The tomb took 11 years to build and employed thousands of workers who were paid in rice. Tu Duc designed his own final resting place complete with a perch for fishing and an island for hunting.
Highlights: Tu Duc was so terrified of grave robbers that after the burial, all 200 workers who knew the tomb's true location were beheaded. The actual coffin rests somewhere else entirely, meaning the elaborate complex you walk through is essentially a decoy palace.
Insider tips
- Walk past the main pavilion around the left side where a crumbling stone bridge leads to Tu Duc's actual burial island, a spot most tourists miss.
- Bring mosquito repellent the pond areas get swarmed at dusk and the mozzies here are relentless.
- Wear comfortable shoes with grip the stone steps get slick with moss after rain.
- Hire a guide outside the gate for around 50,000 VND they know the poems carved on the walls and can explain the emperor's tragic love story.
