About

Quick facts: Three French contractors competed to build this neo-Romanesque cathedral between 1877 and 1883. Every single brick was shipped from Marseille, and the 58-meter bell towers were only added in 1895.

Highlights: Stand at the front plaza around 5 PM when the setting sun hits the red brick facade and the whole cathedral glows like amber. The 21 massive bells in the twin towers still ring by hand, rung by a single bell ringer who climbs 140 steps to reach them.

Insider tips

  • Bring a wide-angle lens to capture the full height of the twin towers from the front plaza.
  • Sunday mass at 9:30 AM features a full choir and organ, open to anyone regardless of religion.
  • The statue of the Virgin Mary in front of the cathedral reportedly shed tears in 2005, drawing thousands of onlookers.
  • Skip the side streets during lunch hour when motorbike traffic is heaviest around the square.
