Thien Mu Pagoda
Best time to visit
Come around 7-8 AM when the river mist is still rising and the grounds are peacefully empty. Afternoon visits mean crowds and heat, but catch sunset for golden light on the tower.
Budget tips
Entry is completely free, no tickets needed. There is no parking fee for bicycles or motorbikes, and a riverboat taxi from Hue city center costs around 50,000-70,000 VND.

About
Quick facts: Seven stories high and shaped like an octagonal tower, this riverside pagoda has been a spiritual anchor since the 17th century. A turquoise Austin car parked by the entrance tells the story of a Buddhist monk who drove to Saigon in 1963 to protest religious persecution.
Highlights: That vintage Austin A95 car didn't just end up here by chance. In 1963, Thich Quang Duc drove this very vehicle to a Saigon intersection, the place where he set himself on fire in a dramatic protest that shocked the world and ultimately shifted U.S. policy on Vietnam.
Insider tips
- Skip the main gate and walk around the left side to see the original bronze cannons and the massive Phuoc Duyen tower up close without crowds.
- Bring a scarf or cover your shoulders before entering the prayer halls, guards will politely stop anyone in tank tops or short shorts.
- The best photo angle is from the riverbank across the water, which catches the full seven stories reflected at golden hour.
- Ignore touts offering to 'show you the real pagoda,' the main grounds are fully open and free to explore on your own.
