Varias capillas conservan vívidos frescos bizantinos del siglo XI, y la Iglesia Oscura ha preservado sus pinturas gracias a siglos de oscuridad casi total.
Destacados: La Iglesia Oscura recibió su nombre porque no tiene casi ventanas, y esa penumbra perpetua es exactamente la razón por la que sus frescos bíblicos del siglo XI sobrevivieron en condiciones tan prístinas. Un solo rayo de luz natural incide en la pintura de la cúpula de Cristo Pantocrátor justo en el ángulo adecuado, haciendo que los halos dorados parezcan brillar contra el fondo azul profundo.

- Visit the Apple Church and Snake Church early in your walk before crowds cluster in the narrow corridors between chapels.
- Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, the carved stone pathways and steep stair climbs between chapels can be slippery.
- Photography inside the chapels is often restricted, but you can capture excellent exterior shots of the rock-cut facades from the upper pathway.
