Start early before the heat hits. Walk along the main path from the Maspalomas lighthouse toward the dunes; the sand shifts daily so stay near the marked trails to avoid disorientation.

A large botanical garden and zoo with dolphin shows and exotic birds. Arrive by 11 AM to catch the first dolphin presentation and walk the shaded aviary exhibits before the midday sun.

Drive or take the bus to this picturesque fishing village known as 'Little Venice' for its canals and flower-covered bridges. Stroll the marina, browse the Tuesday/Friday market stalls, and swim off the sandy beach by the harbor.

Head back to the Maspalomas beach strip near the Faro lighthouse where several open-air bars have loungers and sunset views. Order a cold beer or a tropical cocktail and watch the sun dip behind the dunes.

Arrive early around 8 AM to beat the heat and crowds. Park at the trailhead off GC-600 and hike 1.5 km uphill to the massive volcanic rock monolith. The trail is clearly marked with stunning views of the central highlands.

Drive 15 minutes north from Roque Nublo. This is Gran Canaria's highest peak at 1,949 m; look for the viewpoint platform just past the military radar station. On clear days you can see Mount Teide on Tenerife across the ocean.

Head east 30 minutes to this lush ravine. Drive down into the valley and stop at the cave houses carved into the cliffs , search for 'Mirador de La Atalaya' for the best viewpoint. Several cave restaurants serve food inside the mountain.

Located in Gáldar about 25 minutes north. This museum protects a pre-Hispanic Canarian settlement with painted caves. Book tickets online in advance as entry is timed and limited to 30 visitors per slot.

Head back toward the central Las Palmas area or stop in Gáldar town. Look for a restaurant advertising 'cocina canaria' and order Sancocho Canario, a salted fish stew with sweet potatoes and mojo sauces, a traditional island dish.

Head to Playa de Las Canteras, the city's main urban beach stretching along Paseo de Las Canteras. Go early to secure a good spot near the La Barra natural reef which keeps the water calm for swimming.

Walk the cobblestone streets of Vegueta, the oldest neighborhood in Las Palmas centered around Plaza de Santa Ana. Look for the leafy patios and colonial-era balconies along Calle Mendizábal.

Visit this 15th-century mansion where Christopher Columbus supposedly stopped on his way to the Americas. The museum on Calle Colón houses maps, nautical instruments, and Canary Islands colonial history exhibits.

Explore the archaeological museum at Calle Dr. Verneau 2, just a few blocks from Casa de Colón. It holds one of the best collections of pre-Hispanic Guanche artifacts including pottery and mummies.

Walk the Paseo de Las Canteras from the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus toward the Playa de Las Alcaravaneras end. The sunset views over the Atlantic with the reef silhouetted are excellent for photos.
