Getting around

Your 20-day loop is best navigated with the Japan Rail Pass, covering Shinkansen and JR lines between Kyoto, Osaka, Takayama, Hiroshima, Tokyo, Kanazawa, Nagoya, and beyond. Use Kyoto and Osaka Metro for urban hops, and Tokyo Metro plus JR Yamanote Line across the capital. Walking is best within historic quarters like Kyoto's Higashiyama, Nara's Naramachi, and Takayama's Old Town. For Shirakawa-go, take the Nohi bus from Takayama (about 50 minutes). Miyajima is reached by JR train to Miyajimaguchi then a 10-minute ferry. Hakone and Fuji areas use the Hakone Free Pass covering trains, cable cars, and Lake Ashi boats. Taxis via JapanTaxi, Uber, or DiDi run about $1.20 per kilometer when needed.
