概要
クイックファクト: 直径約31メートルのドームの下では声がふわりと響き、中央に立つと天井のモザイクが光を受けて金色に輝いて見える。訪れると驚くのは、キリスト教とイスラム教の装飾が同じ空間に残されていて、数世紀の宗教史が重なった独特の雰囲気を肌で感じられる。
見どころ: 礼拝堂の北側にある「涙の柱」には小さな穴が開いていて、昔から訪れる人たちがそこに指を入れて痛みを和らげるよう祈るという奇習が伝わっている、触れるとひんやりした石の感触も忘れられないよ。大ドームは537年に建築家アンテミウスとイシドロスによって完成し、直径は約31メートルで、1453年以降多くの金色モザイクが漆喰で覆われていたが、1930年代に白いベールをはがされたとき、デエシスのモザイクなどが息を呑むように現れた。
