About
Quick facts: Here four Buddha statues were carved directly into the granite wall. The most impressive is a 14-meter long reclining Buddha representing the passage to nirvana.
Highlights: The 4.6-meter seated statue holds its arms crossed over its chest in a unique gesture not found on any other Buddha in Sri Lanka. Modern pilgrims still stop in silence before the standing Buddha, touching the rock smoothed by a thousand years of devotional gestures.
Insider tips
- Bring shoes that are easy to remove: you will have to walk barefoot on the sacred area around the statues, and the stone becomes scorching hot by midday.
- The best spot to photograph the reclining Buddha is from the southeast corner of the platform, with the early morning light behind you.
- Do not limit yourself to a frontal view: walk around the rock to notice the veins in the granite that the medieval monks skillfully avoided during carving.
- Arrive before 9:00 to have the site all to yourself: after 10:00 the organized bus groups arrive.
