About
Quick facts: Called the "House of Images," it houses some of the most impressive standing Buddha statues in Polonnaruwa, over 3 meters high. The interior walls preserve fragments of original 12th-century frescoes, still visible despite centuries of exposure to the elements.
Highlights: Unlike the other open temples, here you walk in an enclosed space that amplifies the echo of footsteps, creating an almost hypnotic atmosphere. The statues are not aligned as one would expect: one is slightly turned toward the entrance, as if welcoming those who enter with a sideways glance.
Insider tips
- Enter through the less crowded side door on the north side, and observe the statues from different angles before stopping in front of the central one.
- Bring a pocket flashlight: the frescoes on the ceiling and in the dark corners are much better seen with direct light.
- Do not focus only on the large statues: look down and you will find small carvings and floral patterns on the stone bases.
- If you arrive after 10:00 AM, visit the nearby Vatadage first and come back here once the tourist group has passed.
