About
Quick facts: These circular brick walls once guarded Sri Lanka's most sacred treasure: the relic of the Buddha's tooth. Four splendid carved entrances, each facing a cardinal point, lead to the small central stupa that rises at the center of this 12th-century structure.
Highlights: Look closely at the three bands of intricate carvings on the lowest platform: each layer tells a different story, with elephants, lions, and dancing dwarfs chiseled into the stone. The moonstone (sandakada pahana) at the northern entrance is considered the finest example of Sinhalese sculptural art, with its five concentric rows of flames, animals, and lotus flowers.
Insider tips
- Enter from the north entrance first: here you will find the most beautiful moonstone of the entire site, often overlooked by hurried visitors.
- Place your smartphone on the ground with the camera parallel to the stone to capture the perfect symmetry of the three carved bands: it makes a cover-worthy shot.
- Skip the center of the monument if there is a line; the best view is from the outside, encompassing the entire circle of columns.
- Bring a water bottle because inside the archaeological area there are no water points and the sun beats down hard as early as 9:00 AM.
