Lankatilaka Temple
Best time to visit
Visit early in the morning (7:00-9:00) when the raking light illuminates the red bricks and the temperatures are still cool. Avoid the afternoon between 12:00 and 15:00 when the scorching sun makes the visit uncomfortable.
Budget tips
Entry is included in the combined Cultural Triangle ticket (about 30 USD for 2 days) which covers all sites in Polonnaruwa. Bring water and a reusable bottle, as bottles on site cost three times as much.

About
Quick facts: Its walls rise to 17 meters, an impressive height for a 12th-century temple. Archaeologists have discovered that the original Buddha statue was over 4 meters tall; today only its feet remain.
Highlights: Unlike other stone temples, its side walls were built of red brick, an architectural anomaly that makes it almost unique among the ruins of Polonnaruwa. Climbing to the top floor, where the Buddha statue once stood, you enjoy a breathtaking view of the surrounding jungle that makes you understand why this place held such powerful sacred significance.
Insider tips
- Enter from the north side of the temple to avoid the crowd that gathers at the main entrance around 10:00.
- Bring a white umbrella: it reflects heat and allows you to take creative photos with the red bricks in the background.
- The stairways are steep and without handrails, so wear closed shoes with non-slip soles.
- Do not skip the small side shrine dedicated to Vishnu: few visitors notice it, but it preserves fragments of well-preserved original frescoes.
