About
Quick facts: Every day hundreds of Buddhist devotees arrive with lotus flowers to honor this 30-meter high stupa. It dates back to the 12th century and is part of Sri Lanka's cultural triangle, yet today it is still a very active place of worship.
Highlights: If you sit on the east side of the stupa at dawn, the sun rises exactly behind the white dome, creating a golden glow that lasts barely four minutes. Locals call this moment "the awakening of the stupa" and many arrive in silence to meditate during those instants.
Insider tips
- Take off your shoes before stepping onto the stupa platform: the stone becomes scorching hot at noon, better to protect yourself with thick socks.
- The west side is the best for photos at sunset, but the east side offers the best light in the early morning.
- Bring a lotus flower (they sell them at the entrance for a few rupees) to offer as the local pilgrims do.
- Do not stop only on the main platform: walk around the outer perimeter, you will find small niches with little-known statues.
