Visit early in the morning (8:00-10:00) when the light gently filters through the windows of the royal palace and the halls are almost deserted. In January and February the climate is drier and more pleasant.

About

Quick facts: Housed within the ancient royal palace, the museum gathers over 800 artifacts from the sacred city of Polonnaruwa. Its halls hold limestone Buddha statues and one of the most complete collections of medieval Sinhalese coins in Sri Lanka.

Highlights: Few know that here lies one of the most striking bronze statues of the dancing god Shiva, found intact among the ruins of a Hindu temple. The details carved into the hand gestures and the serene expression on the face still seem alive, as if the cosmic dance had stopped just an instant ago.

Insider tips

  • Ask the caretaker to turn on the interior lights in the darkest halls: the details of the stone carvings become spectacular.
  • Do not miss the small courtyard at the back of the museum, where tombstones and stelae are displayed outdoors, little visited by tourists.
  • Bring a notebook to transcribe the inscriptions in ancient Sinhalese: some tell incredible stories of kings and battles.
  • At the end of the visit, go up to the palace terrace: the view over the ruins of the royal city is breathtaking and almost no one goes up there.
