Korte feiten: Dit fort staat op een 20 meter hoge rots, uitstekend boven de wadi-vallei. De muren zijn tot 3 meter dik en binnenin bevinden zich ondergrondse tunnels die naar geheime waterbronnen leiden.
Hoogtepunten: Vanaf de toren heb je uitzicht op de enige plek in Oman waar de woestijn de oceaan ontmoet. Een aanblik waarvoor fotografen de helft van hun apparatuur zouden geven. Op de muren van het fort zijn nog oude inscripties te zien, achtergelaten door Portugese zeelieden 400 jaar geleden.
Insidertips
- Don't miss the chance to climb to the very top tower: it offers the best view over the entire bay and the city.
- Come on weekdays, when there are almost no visitors, while on weekends local families have picnics here.
- Try to find the old Portuguese carved marks on the southern wall: it is a detail known to very few.
- Wear comfortable shoes: the steps are stone and quite steep, and handrails are not everywhere.
