Korte feiten: Hier ligt de oudst bewaarde Koran ter wereld, de Oethman-Koran uit de 7e eeuw, handgeschreven op geitenleer en nog steeds zichtbaar voor bezoekers. Het complex verzamelt zeven historische gebouwen op één terrein, waaronder moskeeën, madrasa's en een bibliotheek met meer dan 20.000 zeldzame manuscripten.
Hoogtepunten: De 1.350 jaar oude Oethman-Koran wordt bewaard in een glazen kast met constante klimaatbeheersing, en je kunt bloedvlekken op de pagina's zien van de dag dat kalief Oethman werd vermoord terwijl hij erin las. Slechts op weinig plekken op aarde kun je zo dicht bij een document komen dat je direct verbindt met de vroegste geschiedenis van de islam.

- Bring a scarf regardless of gender; you must cover your head, shoulders, and knees to enter the mosques.
- Stand by the wooden gate at the main entrance at 3 PM when locals recite the Quran loudly and the sound waves through the courtyard.
- The library with the Uthman Quran is small and easy to overlook; look for the green door to the right behind the Barak-Khan Madrasa.
- Visit the adjacent Chorsu Bazar on the other side of the street first, so you avoid the rush of tourists in the middle of the day.
