Korte feiten: Het museum herbergt meer dan 250.000 objecten die een geschiedenis van meer dan 200.000 jaar beslaan, van het stenen tijdperk tot heden. Hier bevindt zich een van de fijnste collecties ter wereld van Sogdische kunst en een originele 2.000 jaar oude mummie uit de Taklamakan-woestijn.
Hoogtepunten: In de gouden zaal van het museum hangt een 2.300 jaar oude gouden gordel uit de Sogdische cultuur, zo fijn gesneden dat je elk afzonderlijk haar in de leeuwenmanen kunt zien. De collectie van zoroastrische kleitabletten met Sogdisch schrift is de grootste buiten Iran en biedt een uniek inzicht in een verdwenen handelscultuur die maar weinigen kennen.
Insidertips
- Go straight to the gold room on the 2nd floor first, so you have full energy for the most impressive exhibitions.
- Rent an audio guide or book an English-speaking guide at the entrance. The signs are only in Uzbek and Russian.
- Photography is allowed without flash in most halls, but the gold room has a ban on photos.
- Set aside 30 minutes for the 4th floor, which covers the Soviet era and modern Uzbekistan. Very few people make it up there.
