Fly or take the bus into Bilbao's city center. From the airport take Bizkaibus A3247 to Plaza Moyua (20 minutes, 1.50 EUR). Drop bags at your accommodation in Casco Viejo and grab a coffee at a local bar before heading out.
This underrated Basque society museum sits inside a former Dominican convent in the Old Town. Walk through the cloister and the basement archaeological remains, then head upstairs for the temporary exhibits on Basque identity and culture. Admission is about 6 EUR.
Walk into the narrow streets of Casco Viejo and pick a bar on Calle 31 de Agosto, not the main tourist drag. Look for a place where the toothpicks are stacked high and locals are standing at the counter. Order two or three pintxos and a small glass of txakoli (local sparkling white wine).
