Plan language: ČeštinaThe top things to do in Sri Lanka begin with climbing the 200 meter high Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a fifth century citadel with frescoes and mirror walls. Explore the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, which houses the Buddha's tooth. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot leopards and elephants at Yala National Park, covering nearly 979 square kilometers.

Yala
Spot leopards lounging on sun-warmed rocks while elephants roam coastal scrubland. A single safari circuit packs in leopards, sloth bears, crocodiles, and 400 species of birds.
Rychlá fakta: Covering 979 square kilometers, this park protects one of the highest leopard densities anywhere on Earth , roughly one cat per square kilometer in the prime Block 1 sector. More than 215 bird species have been recorded here, including migrating flocks that arrive from Siberia and the Himalayas between September and April.
Zajímavosti: During the dry season, leopards barely flinch when safari jeeps roll past, often lounging on granite boulders just meters from the dirt tracks. You might watch a male leopard drag a freshly killed deer across the road at noon while a tusker elephant rumbles through the bushes 50 meters away.

Polonnaruwa
No other place lets you walk through a thousand-year-old royal city that was abandoned and reclaimed by jungle. You will cycle past giant stupas, ancient Buddha carvings, and palace ruins with wild peacocks roaming freely.
Rychlá fakta: Three massive Buddha statues carved directly into a granite cliff face stand guard over the ancient city. Over 1.5 million visitors walk these palace grounds yearly, discovering relics from a kingdom that dominated South Asia for centuries.
Zajímavosti: The Gal Vihara rock temple features four Buddha images carved from a single granite face, including a 14-meter reclining Buddha with a surprisingly serene expression that seems to shift as sunlight moves across the stone. At the Royal Palace complex, you can still see the 30-meter long audience hall supported by carved stone columns, where 12th century kings once hosted visiting dignitaries from as far as China.

Dambulla
Climb 500 stone steps through golden rock face to reach 2,000-year-old cave sanctuaries filled with glowing Buddha statues and ceiling murals. Inside the dark chambers, sunlight cuts through openings to illuminate painted kings, dripping stalactites, and rows of silent meditating figures.
Rychlá fakta: Cave number 2 alone contains over 16,000 square feet of painted Buddha imagery, enough murals to cover nearly four basketball courts. The complex's five caves shelter 153 Buddha statues plus statues of kings and gods, all carved from solid granite cliff face.
Zajímavosti: One cave features a 14-meter reclining Buddha carved from living rock, with a hidden pillow cavity where monks once stashed precious manuscripts. Another holds a Buddha carved to look like he's breathing, with subtle chest shaping that creates an optical illusion when lantern light flickers across the stone.

Galle
Wander through 500 years of layered history inside a 1.6-kilometer wall where 4,000 people still live, work, and go to school. Taste cinnamon-laced Dutch curry, watch boys dive off the ramparts at sunset, and explore lanes where Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences collide.

Ratnapura
Witness the sunrise from a sacred peak where four religions converge. Feel the chill air and hear temple bells as you join pilgrims ascending 5,500 steps through the dark before dawn.
Rychlá fakta: Every year, thousands of pilgrims make a nighttime climb of 5,500 stone steps to reach the summit before sunrise. The peak is topped by a massive footprint-shaped depression that Buddhists believe was left by the Buddha, while Muslims attribute it to Adam, Hindus to Shiva, and Christians to St. Thomas.
Zajímavosti: At the summit, pilgrims ring a massive bell exactly once for every successful climb they've completed, creating a chaotic, joyful symphony that echoes across the mountain at dawn. The real magic happens just before sunrise when hundreds of headlamps snake up the mountainside, looking like a river of fire winding through the dark forest.

Pinnawala
Nowhere else can you watch a herd of 80 elephants march through town directly to a river for their daily bath. Stand thigh-deep in the water as baby elephants splash and play just meters away.
Rychlá fakta: Around 80 orphaned and injured elephants live and roam freely across the 25-acre riverfront property. Every morning around 10am, the herd marches through the streets to the nearby river for their daily two-hour bath, a procession that draws thousands of visitors.
Zajímavosti: Unlike zoos where animals are separated from humans by fences, mahouts (caretakers) live alongside specific elephants 24/7, forming bonds that last decades. One elderly mahout named Somapala has cared for the same blind elephant named Tikiri for 35 years, and she recognizes his footsteps and voice instantly.

Mirissa
Powder-soft sand meets palm-fringed shores and some of the best whale watching in the world. Swim in gentle waves, feast on fresh seafood, and watch the sunset from atop a rocky island.

Use PickMe instead of tuk tuk drivers who haggle on the street. It's like Uber and half the price. Drivers are way nicer too.
Wish I stayed longer than 10 days. The island has so much variety. Beaches, hills, wildlife. Felt rushed by the end.
The food blew my mind. Kottu roti from a street stall in Kandy was the best thing I ate all trip. Spicy but worth it.
Honestly one of the friendliest countries I've ever been to. Strangers helped us when our train got canceled. Really genuine people.
Got back last week. Sri Lanka is beautiful but honestly the traffic in Colombo is soul crushing. Plan extra time for everything.
