Sutjeska National Park
Beste Besuchszeit
Late spring (May-June) for lush greenery and wildflowers, or September for crisp hiking conditions and golden autumn colors. Summer afternoons get hot in the valleys but mornings above 1,500 meters are cool and clear.
Budgettipps
Entry is 5 BAM (2.50 EUR) per person. Hiring a licensed guide to enter Perućica forest costs about 50 BAM (25 EUR) for a group and is mandatory for that zone; skip it and stick to the marked trails around Trnovačko Lake to save money.

Schnelle Fakten: Europe's last primeval rainforest, Perućica, covers 1,434 hectares within the park. The park also protects the 2,386-meter Maglić mountain, Bosnia's highest peak.
Highlights: Deep inside Perućica forest, trees have been growing and dying untouched for centuries; some fallen beeches measure over 50 meters long and are completely covered in thick moss. The Skakavac waterfall drops 75 meters into a turquoise pool where the water temperature hovers around 6°C year-round, with mist creating rainbows on sunny afternoons.
Insidertipps
- Wear waterproof hiking boots even in summer; the trails to Skakavac waterfall pass through muddy sections and small stream crossings.
- Bring a headlamp if hiking Maglić, the 8-hour round trip often finishes after sunset for casual hikers.
- Camp overnight at Trnovačko Lake during summer weekdays to have the stunning glacial lake almost entirely to yourself.
- Pack insect repellent for June through August, the beech forests harbor persistent mosquitoes and horseflies near water sources.
