Schnelle Fakten: Mit über 2.000 Pflanzenarten auf 273 Hektar geht dieser viktorianische Botanische Garten auf das Jahr 1787 zurück. Sein berühmter 200 Jahre alter Großer Banyanbaum erstreckt sich über 4,4 Hekkare und zählt damit zu den größten Baumkronen der Welt.
Highlights: Der Große Banyanbaum hier ist nicht nur alt, er ist ein lebender Wald aus über 3.600 Luftwurzeln, die wie einzelne Stämme aussehen und ein einziges riesiges Blätterdach tragen. Nach einem Blitzschlag und einer Pilzinfektion in den 1920er-Jahren wurde der ursprüngliche Hauptstamm entfernt, doch der Baum gedachte weiter und baute sich aus und wurde im Wesentlichen zu seinem eigenen Klon.

- Skip the tram inside the garden, walking the 2 kilometer loop past the banyan, greenhouses, and lake is more rewarding.
- Best photo of the Great Banyan is from the eastern side around 10 AM when the sun filters through the aerial roots at a low angle.
