Schnelle Fakten: Ein Kohlebecken von 1667 loderte einst auf dieser Landspitze und warnte Schiffe lange bevor der heutige Turm gebaut wurde. Der letzte bemannte Leuchtturm Irlands wurde 1996 auf automatischen Betrieb umgestellt, womit mehr als drei Jahrhunderte Leuchtturmwärter-Dienst endeten.
Highlights: Im Laternenhaus dreht sich die mächtige Linse auf einem Schwimmer, der in einem flachen Becken mit flüssigem Quecksilber sitzt, sodass sich der gesamte Mechanismus fast lautlos dreht. In klaren Nächten reicht der Strahl 23 Seemeilen weit hinaus aufs Meer, ein weißer Puls, auf den sich vorbeifahrende Schiffe bei der Annäherung an die Bucht ausrichten.
