Schnelle Fakten: The dazzling white cliff gets its name from Turkish pirates who used these very steps as a landing point in the 16th and 17th centuries. The marl limestone contains microscopic marine fossils that give it that brilliant white appearance.

Highlights: At sunset the white marl reflects the changing light in shades of pink, orange and deep blue, as if the cliff itself is glowing from within. Swim out a few meters and look back: the contrast between that blinding white wall and the turquoise water creates an optical illusion that feels almost surreal.

Insidertipps

• Wear water shoes with good grip: the bare white rock gets extremely slippery when wet and can be burning hot in summer.
• Walk to the far left end of the cliff away from the main access point for the most dramatic photos without other visitors in frame.
• Skip midday visits in July and August when the white rock reflects blinding sun and the beach is packed shoulder to shoulder.
• Climb to the top of the staircase for a bird's-eye view down the entire formation and across the Mediterranean.
