Highlights: Michelangelo entwarf die massive Kuppel, die fast 136 Meter hoch ist, und die Akustik im Inneren ist so präzise, dass ein Flüstern am Altar im weiten Mittelschiff gehört werden kann. Unter der Basilika befindet sich die Nekropole, in der der heilige Petrus begraben sein soll. Man kann tatsächlich antike römische Gräber nur wenige Meter unter den Füßen sehen, ein eindrucksvoller Kontrast zur Renaissancekunst darüber.

- Dress respectfully, cover shoulders and knees, and carry a lightweight scarf for quick coverage at security if needed.
- Arrive 30–45 minutes before opening to get ahead of the main security line and enjoy clearer views of the nave.
- Climb the dome first if you want fewer people in photos, take the stairs for better vantage points and cheaper fare, or the lift for part of the way if you have mobility limits.
- Skip Scavi unless you booked well in advance, and photograph the nave from the central aisle and the dome base for classic wide-angle shots.
