Schnelle Fakten: This wood and stone building was erected by Jamaica's first black millionaire, George Stiebel Devon. His story of rising from the son of slaves to plantation owner and banker continues to inspire visitors today.

Highlights: In the courtyard of the house grows a breadfruit tree that is a direct descendant of the original tree from the HMS Bounty. It is a living monument to Captain Bligh, the man who brought breadfruit to Jamaica and changed Caribbean cuisine.

Insidertipps

  • Enter the house first while it is fresh and cool, and save the ice cream for the end of your visit.
  • The best photos of the front facade are taken in the early morning hours, before 10 AM, when the light is most beautiful.
  • Skip the guided vehicle tour of the estate, you get much more by exploring the rooms on your own.
  • Bring a hat and water, there is not much shade in the garden during the midday hours.
