Schnelle Fakten: The massive red torii gate appears to float on the water at high tide, with its base submerged up to 6 meters beneath the surface. When the tide goes out, visitors can actually walk right up to the gate and touch the massive pillars, which are over 16 meters tall.
Highlights: The shrine is built entirely over the water on stilts, so at high tide the whole complex seems to hover above the bay with the buildings reflected perfectly in the still water. The nearby five-story pagoda catches the sunset light and turns a deep vermilion that makes every photo look surreal.

- Check the tide table before you go so you can catch both the floating gate at high tide and walk to the gate at low tide.
- Stand at the Daiganji Temple side around sunset for the classic shot of the gate perfectly backlit in the orange glow.
- Skip the crowds by arriving on the first ferry around 6:30 AM when the whole shrine is nearly empty.
- Wear socks you can slip off easily, since you'll remove shoes to walk the shrine corridors and the wooden planks get cold in winter.
