Schnelle Fakten: The largest lemur in the world lives here, the indri, whose deafening morning songs can be heard more than three kilometers away. The park protects one of the last patches of lowland rainforest in Madagascar, where more than 100 species of orchids have been discovered.
Highlights: Before sunrise, a surreal choir of indris echoes through the forest, which locals describe as the songs of ancestral spirits. Scientists have discovered that these lemur songs serve to mark territory and have been passed down among families for many generations.
Insidertipps
- Take at least one hour just for sitting near the entrance and listening to the indris' songs, it is an experience you will not have anywhere else.
- Wear long trousers and closed shoes, leeches are very active after rain and are found everywhere.
- Ask the guide to take you to the less frequented Mantadia trail, where you will have more chances to encounter rare lemur species.
- Keep your camera always ready, lemurs can appear suddenly and disappear in a few seconds.
