Schnelle Fakten: Der große, fast rechteckige Platz öffnet sich zum Fluss und wird von einem triumphalen Tor zur Innenstadt begrenzt, ein beeindruckendes Bühnenbild für Schiffsverkehr und Flusslicht. Cafés und Straßenkünstler füllen bei Sonnenuntergang die Pflastersteine, und Konzerte sowie öffentliche Veranstaltungen ziehen regelmäßig tausende Besucher an.
Highlights: Nach dem verheerenden Erdbeben von 1755 ließ der Marquês de Pombal die gesamte Uferfront mit dem hölzernen gaiola-Erdbebenschutz und strengen, symmetrischen Arkaden neu errichten, an vielen Fassaden sind noch originale Holznägel und das klare Raster der Pombal'schen Planung sichtbar. Insider flüstern, die bronzene Reiterstatue von König José I, geschaffen von Joaquim Machado de Castro, trägt am Sockel winzige Hammerschläge aus dem 18. Jahrhundert, bei genauem Hinsehen schimmert das Metall und man kann den salzigen Hauch des Flusses riechen.

4.3Sunset after 7pm was magical with fewer tourists. Street performers made it lively, though souvenir stalls are overpriced.
Went at noon on a Saturday, very crowded. Took a 20 euro boat tour that felt a bit overpriced, but there are great photo spots by the arch.
Arrived at 8am, almost empty and peaceful. Free to stroll the plaza and riverside, the views were worth it but cafes are pricey.
Visited with kids in the afternoon; lots of space for them to run. The plaza is free and lovely but nearby museum fees add to the day cost.
