Schnelle Fakten: Hier befindet sich einer der größten Naturhäfen der Welt, der jahrhundertelang ein Handelsknotenpunkt war. Weiße Sandstrände erstrecken sich über fast 30 Kilometer, und das Wasser ist so klar, dass man den Grund in zehn Metern Tiefe sehen kann.
Highlights: In der Nähe der Küste liegen die Ruinen alter ägyptischer und römischer Handelsstädte, die der Sand im Laufe der Jahrhunderte immer wieder verschlungen und wieder freigelegt hat. Einheimische Fischer finden gelegentlich antike Münzen und Tonscherben im Sand, die von der einstigen Bedeutung dieses Hafens auf den Handelswegen des Indischen Ozeans zeugen.
