The town is the religious heart of the island, home to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pine, which draws thousands of pilgrims each September for the Fiesta del Pino.
Highlights: On the first Sunday of September, locals carry a 60-kilogram silver statue of the Virgin through streets lined with 300-year-old Canarian houses, their balconies draped with hand-embroidered linens. The basilica's pine tree statue is actually carved from a single piece of wood from the original tree where shepherds claim the Virgin appeared in 1481.
