Schnelle Fakten: Über 80 Höhlenheiligtümer sind in die Felswand gemeißelt, aber nur fünf Haupthöhlen sind für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. Die Stätte ist seit über 2.000 Jahren ein Pilgerziel und damit einer der ältesten und am längsten durchgehend genutzten Höhlentempelkomplexe der Welt.
Highlights: Fast 1.500 Deckengemälde bedecken die Höhlendecken, wobei einige Abschnitte noch leuchtende Farben aus natürlichen Pigmenten zeigen, die vor Hunderten von Jahren aufgetragen wurden. Eine Höhle enthält einen 14 Meter langen liegenden Buddha, der direkt aus dem Felsen gehauen wurde, mit einem hölzernen Kissen, das zur Aufbewahrung einer Reliquie geformt ist.

- Wear or carry socks since you must remove shoes at the entrance and the stone path heats up quickly by mid-morning.
- Turn left immediately inside the first cave to spot a small ceiling panel where pigments remain shockingly bright after 400 years.
- Skip the souvenir stalls at the bottom and buy from vendors near the exit instead, prices drop by half.
- Visit on a full moon night if possible, the temple holds special ceremonies with drumming and torchlight that transform the atmosphere.
