Schnelle Fakten: Its Great Hall floor features 30,000 tiles laid in a checkerboard pattern, and the entire building was saved from demolition in the 1950s after a public campaign. The Minton tile floor is so massive that it takes a team of conservators several weeks just to clean it.
Highlights: The Minton tile floor is actually hollow underneath, built on a sprung wooden frame that gives it a slight bounce as you walk across. During restoration, conservators discovered the floor had been designed to be lifted and moved so the space below could be used as a ballroom.

- Ask at the desk about the 'Hollow Floor' demonstration where staff show you how the tiles bounce.
- The former jail cells in the basement are easy to miss but genuinely atmospheric.
