Schnelle Fakten: Ein gewaltiger 40 Meter langer Sextant, teilweise in der Erde vergraben, ermöglichte es Ulugh Beg in den 1420er Jahren, Sternpositionen mit erstaunlicher Genauigkeit zu messen. Sein Sternenkatalog mit 1.018 Sternen blieb über 200 Jahre lang der präziseste der Welt und wurde von Astronomen von Istanbul bis Indien genutzt.
Highlights: Das Hauptinstrument des Observatoriums war ein kolossaler Meridianbogen, der in einen Graben am Hang gemeißelt, mit Marmor ausgekleidet und mit präzisen Markierungen versehen war. Astronomen stiegen in diesen steinernen Tunnel, um Himmelskörper zu verfolgen, und nutzten dabei nichts als ihre Augen und die stille Geometrie des Bogens über ihnen.
