Schnelle Fakten: Colorful buildings climb up the hillside around a natural harbor that has sheltered fishing boats for centuries. Only about 400 people live here year-round, yet nearly 4 million visitors squeeze through its narrow streets annually.
Highlights: Look closely at the pastel facades lining the waterfront and you'll notice each one uses a different shade. Local fishermen still paint their boats to match their houses, a tradition that's been passed down for generations.

Schnelle Fakten: Looming over the turquoise harbor below, this 16th-century fortress once defended Portofino from pirate attacks and later became a retreat for English aristocracy. Its terraced gardens explode with wisteria, bougainvillea, and lemon trees, offering some of the most photographed vistas on the Italian Riviera.
Highlights: You can stand on the same stone ramparts where British poet Lord Byron and writer Mary Shelley spent afternoons during their travels through Italy in the 1820s. The castle's private garden hides a centuries-old cistern that collects rainwater, still functional and now surrounded by a grove of olive trees planted over 400 years ago.

Schnelle Fakten: Founded around the 12th century, this Romanesque church overlooks the Portofino harbor from a small hilltop perch. Its stark white stone facade and striped black-and-white marble interior draw inspiration from similar churches across Genoa and the Ligurian coast.
Highlights: Inside the modest sanctuary hangs a centuries-old wooden crucifix that fishermen once prayed to before heading out to sea. Locals say the cross miraculously survived a devastating 19th-century storm that wrecked most of the harbor's fishing fleet.

Schnelle Fakten: Perched at the tip of the Portofino peninsula, this red-and-white striped lighthouse has been guiding ships along the Ligurian coast since 1917. Its light flashes once every five seconds and can be seen from up to 16 nautical miles away.
Highlights: From the lighthouse terrace, you get a 360-degree panorama where the deep blue of the Ligurian Sea meets the lush green of the Regional Park of Portofino. On clear days, you can spot the entire Gulf of Tigullio and even catch glimpses of Corsica on the horizon.

Schnelle Fakten: This tiny triangular piazza measures just 30 meters across yet draws hundreds of visitors daily during summer months. Cafes here charge premium prices for the privilege of people-watching while superyachts float just steps away in the harbor.
Highlights: Look down at the cobblestones and you will find a mosaic depicting a wild boar, a playful nod to Portofino's hunting history embedded right in the center of the square. At sunset, the pastel facades of the surrounding houses turn a deep salmon pink that reflects across the water, creating a glow that photographers scramble to capture.

Schnelle Fakten: Over 600 species of plants thrive here, including fragrant maritime pines and rare wild orchids. Just 2 kilometers of coastline hide secret swimming coves that were once favorite hideouts for poets and artists like Lord Byron.
Highlights: Centuries-old terraced olive groves and abandoned vineyards carpet the slopes, remnants of farming traditions that shaped this landscape long before tourism arrived. Look closely near the San Fruttuoso abbey and you might spot bronze statues resting on the seafloor, part of an underwater sculpture garden that doubles as an artificial reef.

Schnelle Fakten: This rugged promontory rises 610 meters above the Ligurian Sea, offering sweeping views of the entire Portofino peninsula. The surrounding Regional Natural Park of Portofino protects 3,000 acres of Mediterranean scrub, ancient olive groves, and dramatic coastal cliffs.
Highlights: At the summit sits a weathered bronze statue of Christ, cast in 1957 using metal from donated bells and scrap from local foundries. Hikers who reach it at sunset watch the light scatter across the sea in shades of amber and violet, with the whole coastline of the Italian Riviera unfolding below.

Schnelle Fakten: Perched on a rocky promontory, this military fortification once housed a 381mm cannon capable of hurling a nearly 900-kilogram shell over 30 kilometers. The massive gun was never actually fired in combat, and the structure now offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Ligurian coastline you'll ever find.
Highlights: The real magic happens at the end of the winding coastal trail when you round the final bend: the enormous rusted cannon still swivels on its tracks, pointing silently out to sea. On clear days, you can spot Corsica on the horizon, and the concrete bunkers are covered in wild Mediterranean brush and wildflowers that bloom bright yellow and purple in spring.

Schnelle Fakten: Three Roman sarcophagi rest inside the abbey church, repurposed as tombs for the Doria family. Monks once fortified this cove against pirate raids, and the bell tower doubled as a watchtower.
Highlights: Look up at the 13th-century cloister arches: each one is carved from a single block of local black slate, not assembled from separate pieces. Rainwater drips through the center opening onto a mosaic of white and black pebbles, a pattern that has washed the same stone floor for over 700 years.

This dense, sweet fruit-filled bread originates from Genoa and was traditionally baked for Christmas celebrations. It was historically taken aboard ships by sailors because it stayed fresh for long voyages.

These delicate, buttery shortbread cookies are shaped like daisies and dusted with powdered sugar. They are a signature treat of Portofino's local bakeries and best enjoyed with a cup of coffee by the harbor.

This rich, custard-like dessert is made from egg yolks, sugar, and sweet wine. It originated in the Liguria region and is often served warm with fresh berries or biscotti.

This iconic Ligurian sauce is made from fresh basil, pine nuts, Parmesan, garlic, and olive oil all ground with a marble mortar and wooden pestle. Portofino's basil is especially fragrant due to the region's mild coastal climate.

Unlike regular focaccia, this paper-thin version from nearby Recco is stuffed with creamy stracchino cheese and baked until crispy. It is protected by an IGP designation ensuring only authentic versions can bear the name.

This is a stuffed veal breast filled with a mixture of eggs, vegetables, herbs, and cheese, then boiled and served cold. It is a classic Sunday family dish in Portofino and across Liguria.

This crisp, aromatic white wine is grown on the steep terraced hillsides of the Ligurian Riviera. The salty sea breezes and rocky soil give it a distinctive mineral finish that pairs perfectly with local seafood.

Portofino's coastline is dotted with lemon groves, and this sweet, tangy digestif is made by steeping lemon peels in alcohol for weeks. It is traditionally served ice-cold after meals to aid digestion.

In Portofino, coffee is often enjoyed as a "caffè corretto" meaning "corrected coffee" with a splash of local grappa or sambuca. This tradition dates back to when fishermen would add spirits to their morning brew for warmth.

Portofino is stunning but way too expensive for what it is. Aperol spritz was 18 euro. Insane.
We spent 4 days here and that was too long. 2 nights max unless you have a boat. The town is tiny.
Take the train to Santa Margherita Ligure instead and walk the coastal path. Way cheaper and same views without the price tag.
Eat at a bakery for lunch not the harbor restaurants. Grab focaccia to go and sit on the rocks. Saves 30 euro easily.
Got married here last spring. Absolutely magical place. The harbor views at sunset are unforgettable.
