Best time to visit
Visit on a weekday morning right after it opens, around 9 AM, to avoid the tour groups that pack in by midday. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable walking weather up the steep cobblestone paths.
Budget tips
Entry costs around 300-400 lek (roughly 3-4 EUR), and students often get a discounted rate with ID. The same ticket covers the adjacent church interior, so you do not pay separately for the fresco viewing.

About
Quick facts: The collection holds over 200 icons and 100 liturgical objects, many created by the 16th century painter Onufri and his son Nikolla. The church building itself, the Dormition of St. Mary, dates from 1797 and was built inside the walls of Berat Castle.
Highlights: Onufri's icons hide a secret in their paint: he mixed egg whites with a rare red pigment made from crushed Armenian stone, and that blend produces a red that still glows richly after nearly 500 years. Look closely at his "Last Supper" and the faces seem to shift as you move, a technique modern scientists have never fully replicated.
Insider tips
- Wear sturdy walking shoes, the approach is a steep cobblestone climb through the castle district with no flat shortcuts.
- Ask the staff to flip on the lights over the iconostasis; the natural light barely reaches the upper panels.
- Photography is allowed but flash is not, bring a fast lens or a phone with good low-light mode for the dark interior.
- Pair your visit with the Ethnographic Museum nearby and catch both on the same walk up the hill.
