About
Quick facts: The museum shelters one of the richest collections of archaeological finds along the entire Adriatic coast, with artifacts pulled from ancient Dyrrhachium and the surrounding region. Its standout piece is a stunning 4th century BC mosaic floor, reconstructed and displayed exactly as the archaeologists uncovered it.
Highlights: The centerpiece is a massive polychrome mosaic of the beautiful Elena, rendered in hundreds of thousands of tiny tesserae in vivid reds, blues, and golds, still carrying the vibrancy it had over two millennia ago. You'll walk right up to it on a raised platform and see the individual stone cubes glinting under the gallery lights.
Insider tips
- Go straight to the upstairs gallery first, that's where the standout mosaic lives, before the tour groups arrive.
- Wear comfortable shoes with grip, some display ramps are gently sloped and can feel slick.
- The windows on the outer wall let in lovely natural light around midday, ideal for photographing the sculptures.
- Ask the staff if the basement tomb chamber is open, it's a fascinating addition when accessible.
