Visit in the late afternoon (after 4 PM) when the light turns golden and crowds from morning tour groups have thinned. The summer months of May through September offer clear skies, though mornings are cooler for the uphill climb.

Budget tips

Entry costs around 200 lek (roughly 2 EUR) for adults, and the ticket covers the on-site museum and arms collection. Combo tickets that include entry to other Gjirokastër museums can save money if you plan to visit several sites in one day.

About

Quick facts: Perched on a hilltop at 336 meters above sea level, this fortress commands views over the entire Drino Valley and the bazaar below. Its clock tower, standing 18 meters tall, was added in the early 19th century and still chimes for locals today.

Highlights: A captured US Air Force T-33 spy plane from 1957 sits on display inside, a relic of the communist era that visitors can walk right up to and touch. The castle also holds an underground tunnel system used as a bomb shelter during the Cold War, stretching deep beneath the stone walls where you can feel the temperature drop dramatically.

Insider tips

  • Wear sturdy walking shoes because the cobblestone path up to the entrance is steep and slippery when wet.
  • Bring a jacket even in summer, the underground tunnel is noticeably colder than the courtyard.
  • Skip the crowded main gate in the morning and start your visit from the western side, which sees far fewer tour groups.
  • Head to the north-facing rampart around sunset for the best photo of the Ottoman-era rooftops below.
