About

Quick facts: Over 150,000 negatives and prints from Albania's early photography era are preserved in this archive, some dating to the 1850s. The museum occupies the former home and studio of the Marubi family, whose three generations documented Albanian life for more than a century.

Highlights: The underground vault holds the original glass-plate negatives, some so fragile they're stored in acid-free boxes and handled only with white gloves. Pjetër Marubi, the founder, was actually an Italian exile who arrived in 1856 and learned photography on the job, then trained his own son to carry the craft forward.

Insider tips

  • Ask staff to show you the climate-controlled vault area, though viewing is restricted, they sometimes open the viewing window for curious visitors.
  • The third floor features rotating temporary exhibitions, so check what's on before your visit to catch a fresh perspective.
  • Spend extra time on the early portraits of Albanian women in traditional dress, they capture vanished fashion and customs.
  • The building sits on Kolë Idromeno Street, named for one of the photographers whose work is displayed, so stroll the street afterward for context.
