Quick facts: Perched on a 130-meter hill above the convergence of three rivers, this fortress has guarded the gateway to northern Albania for over 2,400 years. Legend says the walls were built with the help of a mother who was walled into the structure so it would stand, giving the site its famous "Rozafa" origin story.
Highlights: The legend of Rozafa is the real crown jewel here, a haunting story of a young bride walled into the fortress so the construction would hold. Walk up the stone steps and you can still see cattle bones and bricks left by visitors as offerings to her spirit, a tradition that has survived for centuries.

- Wear sturdy shoes, the cobblestone path up the hill is steep and slippery after rain.
- Head to the highest tower on the southern wall for the best photo of the three rivers meeting below.
