Best time to visit

Late afternoon on a weekday, when tour groups have thinned out and the golden light hits the riverfront facade. Weekends draw bigger crowds, so aim for mid-week visits to enjoy the terrace in relative quiet.

Budget tips

The fortress exterior, river terrace, and surrounding Steenplein are completely free to explore. Any museum exhibitions inside are reasonably priced, and the Antwerp City Card covers entry along with dozens of other attractions in the city.

About

Quick facts: The medieval fortress marks the spot where the Scheldt river narrowed, making it the perfect defensive choke point that gave the city its name, from "aan de werpe," meaning "at the wharf." A carved Romanesque figure of a giant named Druon Antigoon stands below, the legendary character who cut off the hands of river toll evaders, giving the city its hand-clipping folklore.

Highlights: Walk through the massive gateway and you'll step onto the terrace where the world's oldest known traffic sign still stands, a small stone tablet from 1550 that once told ships when to drop anchor. From the top floor, you can watch freighters glide past just meters from where traders paid tolls nine centuries ago, the river traffic unchanged while everything else around you has transformed.

Insider tips

  • Head to the river terrace at sunset for the best photo angle of the fortress facade with the Scheldt behind it.
  • Take the free walking path along the riverbank below the walls to see the 16th century stone work and dock remnants from below.
  • Skip the busy Steenplein entrance during cruise ship arrival times and circle around to the quieter riverside side instead.
  • Look closely at the giant statue below the fortress and ask locals about the hand-tossing legend, it's the city's strangest and best story.
