About

Quick facts: Ten stacked box-shaped galleries rise 60 meters above the Antwerp quays, each rotated a quarter turn from the one below it. The building's red-brown panels are made from Indian sandstone that was chemically treated, and its rooftop offers a 360-degree panorama over the city and port.

Highlights: The rooftop terrace is completely free to access, and you can ride the glass escalators up the side of the building while watching ships glide along the Scheldt River below. Every 10 meters along the way, the walls reveal quotes and poetry about Antwerp, turning the vertical journey itself into an exhibit.

Insider tips

  • Start with the free rooftop first to orient yourself, then work your way down through the galleries rather than climbing from the bottom.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, the glass escalator takes you up but you'll walk down through ten floors of exhibits.
  • Skip the temporary exhibitions if you're short on time, the permanent collection on the middle floors tells the strongest Antwerp story.
  • Visit the ground floor's 'Depot' glass wall to see thousands of stored objects, it's visible without a ticket.
