- Fair taxi price (official, daytime): 130 R$ - 180 R$ (€22 - €31). Use the official taxi rank at the terminal exits. Metered fares to Copacabana or Ipanema typically run 130 to 180 BRL. Avoid drivers who approach you inside arrivals and offer flat prices.
- Best alternative: Executive coach (Alvorada/Real Auto Ônibus) to central bus station, then metro or local bus (22 R$ (€3.74))
- With RioCard, tap on the validator as you enter the bus or pass through the metro turnstile. Validate at the start of each journey. Buses require tapping inside, near the driver or middle door area. Fine without a valid ticket: 250 R$ (€42.55).
- Service charge of 10% is usually added to restaurant bills and is included. If not shown, 10% is customary. Taxi drivers do not expect tips. Porters and guides are tipped small amounts.
- A 10% serviço (service) charge is routinely and legally added to restaurant bills; it is optional but normally paid. Check your bill as some venues add items without your order or pad the total.
- Always choose to pay in Brazilian reais and decline dynamic currency conversion at ATMs and card terminals. Prefer ATMs attached to major banks. Some independent ATMs at tourist spots charge high withdrawal fees, so check the screen before confirming.

How we calculate
Stay is a double room shared by two (one room per two travelers). Food assumes two cheap meals, a modest dinner and a coffee on a budget, a cheap lunch, a restaurant dinner, coffee and a drink mid-range and restaurant meals, coffees and drinks in comfort. Transport is a daily public transport allowance, plus taxis in the higher tiers. Sights is an average daily allowance for entry tickets and activities. Everything is per day of the trip; a 3-night trip counts 3 days.
Not included: flights, travel insurance, city tax (usually a few euros per person per night, paid at the hotel), shopping and nightlife.
