Money tips for Bulgaria

  • Fair taxi price (official, daytime): €10 - €20. Use the official taxi rank or a licensed app (Bolt, Yandex.Taxi, TaxiMe). Agree on the fare or insist the meter is on before departure. Refuse drivers who approach you inside the arrivals hall.
  • Best alternative: Metro line M1 or M2 into central Sofia, or the airport bus (€1.60)
  • Buy a ticket at metro station machines, kiosks or the official app, then validate it before boarding. Metro turnstiles require a validated ticket or card. Failing to validate counts as travelling without a valid ticket. Fine without a valid ticket: €20.
  • Small tips expected in restaurants, around 5-10%. Rounding up in taxis is common; tipping in bars is optional.
  • Some tourist restaurants add a service or cover charge or state prices per 100g rather than per dish. Ask before ordering and check the menu for any added charges.
  • Always choose to be charged in euros and decline dynamic currency conversion. Prefer bank-attached ATMs over independent machines with poor rates. Withdraw in euros, never in euros.

How we calculate

Stay is a double room shared by two (one room per two travelers). Food assumes two cheap meals, a modest dinner and a coffee on a budget, a cheap lunch, a restaurant dinner, coffee and a drink mid-range and restaurant meals, coffees and drinks in comfort. Transport is a daily public transport allowance, plus taxis in the higher tiers. Sights is an average daily allowance for entry tickets and activities. Everything is per day of the trip; a 3-night trip counts 3 days.

Not included: flights, travel insurance, city tax (usually a few euros per person per night, paid at the hotel), shopping and nightlife.
