Visit on a weekday morning before 10am to avoid the crowds. Late afternoon on weekdays is also lovely, when golden light filters through the alleyways.

Quick facts: Dozens of narrow alleyways snake through a former residential area, now filled with more than 200 tiny shops, art studios, and food stalls. Locals still live upstairs, hanging laundry out windows while tourists browse handmade crafts below.
Highlights: Artist Chen Yifei kickstarted this transformation in 1998 when he set up his studio here, drawing fellow creatives and slowly turning a sleepy old neighborhood into a creative hub. Wander deep enough and you will find the original residents playing mahjong in shaded courtyards, a living slice of old Shanghai amid the commerce.
Insider tips
- Enter from the Taikang Road entrance to ease into the maze rather than the chaotic main gate.
- Wear comfortable shoes, the stone pathways are uneven and you will be walking for hours.
- Pop into the alleys branching off the main drag, that is where quieter studios and cheaper snacks hide.
- Skip weekends entirely, the lanes become shoulder-to-shoulder packed from midday onward.
