Best time to visit

Come at noon, when the carillon plays a full melody and the view from the tower is at its finest. In winter the viewpoints are open for shorter periods, so check the opening hours in advance.

Entry to the town hall is free; climbing the tower costs a symbolic fee (around 30 DKK). There is no combined ticket for multiple attractions in the city, but a visit to the town hall will set you back just a few kroner.

Quick facts: On the 60-meter-high tower, a transparent carillon with 38 bells plays every hour. The building was designed by architects Arne Jacobsen and Erik Moller and opened in 1941, with the keys to the city still hanging in the mayor's office.

Highlights: In an underground vault with thick concrete walls, the original keys to the city from 1941 still lie today. The most beautiful view of all of Aarhus is from the walkway below the tower, right at the moment when the noon carillon starts playing.

Wear sturdy footwear, as a narrow spiral staircase with 217 steps leads up to the tower.
Photograph the facade from Rådhuspladsen square to capture the symmetrical lines without any distracting elements.
Ask to see the ceremonial hall at the end of the tour; a huge tapestry featuring the city hangs there.
