Best time to visit

Early morning hours are ideal. Enter the tunnel while the daylight is still fresh and the crowd has not dispersed. Since the inside is already cool and humid, choose the morning to avoid the midday sun.

Budget tips

Entry is with a single ticket and cash payment is common, so carry small banknotes. Combining several spots on the same day and sharing the guide fee is the most practical way to reduce the total cost.

About

Quick facts: As the outer crust of the molten magma quickly cooled and hardened, the flow inside continued, leaving behind hollow tunnels over a kilometer long. Inside, the temperature drops noticeably from the surface, and the air stays cool and humid.

Highlights: The most impressive detail is the stalactite-like shapes hanging from the ceiling, formed not by water but by drops of lava. In places the ceiling is only a few centimeters thick, and sunlight filters through thin cracks, drawing bright beams of light in the darkness.

Insider tips

  • Wear closed shoes because the ground is slippery and full of uneven stones.
  • Bring a strong headlamp. A phone light is insufficient in the depths of the darkness.
  • Turn on the low light mode on your camera to capture the stalactites on the ceiling and the flow marks on the walls.
  • The section near the entrance is the most visited. The further in you go, the more the crowd and noise decrease.
