Suomenlinna
Best time to visit
Between May and September, especially on weekday mornings, when the ferries are emptier and the sun makes the outings much more pleasant. In winter, the island gains a silent charm, but the freezing winds require very warm clothing.
Budget tips
Admission to the island is free; you only pay for the ferry ticket (around 5-7 euros), which works with the HSL public transport card. Bring snacks and water, as prices at the island's cafés are much higher than on the mainland.

About
Quick facts: Cobblestone streets and a tang of sea spray make wandering the fortress islands feel like stepping into a living history painting. You can picnic on old ramparts and discover a lively local community with cafés, artists' studios, and a small maritime museum.
Highlights: Built from 1748 under Augustin Ehrensvärd, the fortress spreads across six linked islands where roughly 800 people still live among mossy cobblestone streets, and on windy mornings you can smell tar, sea salt and the sharp tang of iron from old cannons. Duck into the dim powder magazines and tunnel network carved in the 1700s and the damp stone walls, narrow staircases and ghostly echoes make you feel like you're sneaking through a living time capsule.
Insider tips
- Arrive on the first ferry of the morning (around 6:20 a.m.) to have the island almost all to yourself before tourist groups arrive at 10 a.m.
- Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as the trails have sections of uneven rock and can get slippery.
- Kustaanmiekka beach, at the southern tip, is a great spot for photos of the ships and the sea, but go prepared for strong winds.
- The guided tour of the underground tunnels only takes place at specific times, so book in advance if you want that experience.
