Quick facts: This wooden observation tower rises 30 meters through a dense forest canopy in northern Bavaria. Around 1,500 screws and bolts connect its unusual design, which blends so well with the surrounding trees that many hikers walk right past it.
Highlights: The tower's entire structure is built directly into the living trees, with the platform wrapping around a massive beech trunk rather than standing separate from it. Visitors climb a winding staircase that passes within centimeters of branches and leaves, making the ascent feel like part of the forest itself.
Insider tips
- Walk around the base before climbing to spot the tower from different angles and appreciate the camouflage.
- Bring binoculars for a closer look at woodpeckers and squirrels moving through the branches at eye level.
- Visit on a weekday morning to have the entire platform to yourself.
- Combine the visit with the nearby marked hiking loop that passes two other hidden forest structures.
